Sodium-ion vs. Lithium-ion Battery

The differences between Sodium ion battery and Lithium ion battery are mainly reflected in the following aspects:

Battery internal charge carriers:

Lithium ion battery: Charging and discharging are achieved by the movement and conversion of lithium ions between the positive and negative electrodes.

Sodium ion battery: Charge transfer is achieved by the embedding and extraction of sodium ions between the positive and negative electrodes.

Ionic radius and performance: The larger radius of sodium ions leads to greater resistance to embedding de-embedding in the positive and negative electrodes, poor reversibility and large irreversible capacity loss, which makes the performance of sodium ion batteries inferior to that of lithium ion batteries in some aspects.

Energy density and power density:

Lithium ion battery: have higher energy density and power density, and the energy density can easily reach 200Wh/kg.

Sodium ion battery: The energy density and power density are relatively low, such as the energy density of the first generation of sodium ion batteries of CATL is 160Wh/kg.

Raw materials and cost:

Sodium ion battery: Raw materials are abundant and cheap, and their negative electrodes can also use aluminum foil instead of copper foil to further reduce costs and weight.

Lithium ion battery: Raw materials are relatively scarce and expensive.

‌Safety and lifespan‌:

Sodium battery: It has high safety and can be over-discharged to 0V without safety problems. At the same time, its cycle life is relatively long, but it is still slightly lower than lithium-ion batteries.

Lithium battery: It needs more attention in terms of safety, and its lifespan will be affected by many factors.

‌Charging and discharging speed and efficiency‌:

Sodium battery: It has a faster charging and discharging speed and high efficiency.

Lithium battery: Although it also has a faster charging and discharging speed, it may be slightly inferior to sodium-ion batteries in some aspects.

In summary, there are obvious differences between Sodium ion battery and Lithium ion battery in many aspects. These differences make the two battery technologies have their own advantages and disadvantages and are suitable for different application scenarios.

Due to the lack of large-scale production of sodium ion batteries, from a cost perspective, sodium ion batteries do not have significant advantages over lithium ion battery when applied in the field of solar energy storage and EVs battery application. Lifepo4 is currently the best choice in terms of cost, safety, and cycle life for home storage.

3.2v 280ah 314ah EVE lifepo4 cell with 11000 cycles and 3.2v 280ah Hithium with 10000 cycles all the best choice for energy storage.
