Things about lithium battery explosions

As an ideal choice for portable electronic devices, electric vehicles and energy storage systems, lithium batteries have won the favor of the market with their unique advantages such as high energy density, long cycle life and no memory effect. Frankly speaking, I don't know when lithium batteries have become the carrier of smart, environmentally friendly and innovative energy, bringing convenience and efficiency to our lives. At the same time, we should pay more attention to its use during use to prevent explosions.
1. Causes of lithium battery explosions

a. Long-term overcharging of the battery cell:Overcharging and overcurrent can also cause high temperature and high pressure under long-term charging conditions, resulting in hidden dangers. Lithium batteries may discharge instantly and generate a large amount of current under special temperature, humidity and poor contact conditions, causing spontaneous combustion or explosion.

b. Battery short circuit: When the mobile phone is in a high temperature state, or is hit, metal friction, etc., it may cause a battery short circuit and explosion.
c. Charging causes battery explosion: Playing with the mobile phone while charging, playing while charging will cause the charging time to become longer, and charging for a long time will cause the temperature of the mobile phone to rise, making it more likely to explode.
d. The charger and battery are not compatible: The wrong charger model can easily cause battery accidents.
e. Too high temperature: Too high temperature means that the internal heat of the battery has reached the limit. Long-term charging, high temperature exposure, and baking can easily cause the battery temperature to be too high.
f. Thermal runaway: The reason why the battery has the risk of explosion is that there is a "thermal runaway" process in the reaction inside the battery.
g. Placement environment:An environment with too high temperature or humidity will destroy the stability of the internal structure of the battery.

2. How to prevent lithium battery explosion
a. Avoid overcharging and discharging: Avoid charging lithium batteries to too high a voltage or discharging to too low a voltage to prevent electrolyte instability from causing short circuits or overheating.
b. Avoid physical damage: Protect lithium batteries from physical damage such as extrusion, impact or puncture, and avoid damaging the shell to cause internal short circuits.
c. Avoid high temperature environment: Try to avoid using or storing lithium batteries in high temperature environments to prevent electrolyte instability from causing explosions.
d. Use original chargers and accessories: Use chargers and accessories provided by the original manufacturer, and avoid using inappropriate charging equipment to ensure safe charging.
e. Regularly check and replace aged batteries: Regularly check the status of lithium batteries and replace aged or damaged batteries in time to ensure safe use.
f.Follow the correct usage method: Follow the instructions and safety recommendations provided by the manufacturer to properly use and store lithium batteries.
g. Do not overcharge: Do not overcharge lithium batteries for a long time.
h.Reject defective products.
3.What to do if lithium batteries catch fire
a. Disconnect or remove the external power supply on the device that caught fire.
b. Immediately and continuously soak the electronic device that caught fire with water or other non-flammable liquids to lower the temperature of the lithium battery cell, block heat dissipation, and prevent adjacent battery cells from catching fire.
c.If the device was previously connected to a power outlet, unplug the power from all other power outlets until the system is confirmed to be fault-free.
d. Do not attempt to move burning or smoking electronic equipment to prevent serious personal injury.
e.Do not cover it with objects or try to lower the temperature with ice cubes. This method of isolating the device will prevent the heat of the device from dissipating in a short time, which will increase the danger.

The expansion of diversified application fields provides a broad space for the future development of lithium batteries, but it undoubtedly requires us to pay more attention to its use to prevent explosion.
