Two Neighbor Cells Failed On Purpose No Heat Spread

CATL just proved its aviation grade battery system can handle a worst case thermal runaway scenario without catching the whole pack on fire. The company says this is the worlds first eVTOL battery pack at 350Wh per kg to pass a dual adjacent cell thermal runaway test with zero heat propagation.
Test engineers purposely triggered thermal runaway in two cells sitting right next to each other. They tried it at different spots including center and corner positions. The system held. No heat spread to surrounding cells. That is a big deal for electric aviation safety.

Civil Aviation Authority Watched the Whole Thing
Every step from cell production to final testing was supervised by representatives from the civil aviation authority. That means the test results carry real weight for airframe makers trying to meet commercial

Ready for Mass Production First on AutoFlight Aircraft
CATL says the battery system is now ready for mass production. It will first go onto AutoFlights manned eVTOL aircraft. The cells are prismatic format and deliver 350Wh per kg energy density.
Moving from cars to flying machines CATL says it will keep working with industry partners and universities to push battery safety further. The goal is to raise the safety floor for both aircraft builders and passengers.
