A Big Milestone for Dunhuang's First Grid Side Storage Station
The Dunhuang Guosheng Narada 200MW 800MWh standalone energy storage demo project is now fully built. All civil work and equipment installation are done. This is the first grid side independent storage facility in the city. Once it starts commercial operation it will help fill the gap in the local grid's peak shaving capacity and make better use of renewable energy.
Where It Is and What It Uses
The project sits inside the Dunhuang Photovoltaic Industrial Park. Total investment is 760 million RMB. The DC side uses 160 sets of 5MWh energy storage battery containers. These containers are built around Narada Power's own 314Ah lithium battery cells which the company developed in house.
Built for Tough Desert Conditions
Dunhuang gets frequent sandstorms and wild temperature swings between day and night. That makes reliability and thermal management a real challenge. Narada's 5MWh plus liquid cooled solution tackles this with IP67 rated protection on both the critical electrical parts and the battery packs. There are also multiple safety layers to keep dust out and ensure stable operation. The intelligent liquid cooling system uses a multi stage variable diameter pipe design to keep the temperature difference inside each battery module under 3 degrees Celsius.
What This Means for Dunhuang and Beyond
As energy storage capacity grows in the region Dunhuang is set to move from being just a big wind and solar base to a full integrated demo hub that combines wind solar hydrogen and storage. The hope is that this creates a Dunhuang Model that can be copied across Northwest China and the rest of the country.
Once the station is fully online it will boost the local grid's frequency regulation and peak load management improve system stability and help Dunhuang integrate renewable energy more efficiently. All of that adds up to cleaner greener growth for the area.
